Why did I pick this up? Because I enjoy the adventures of Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden and trying to get current in the series.
What is the story? Harry learns that he and Susan Rodriguez are the proud parents of a little girl, Maggie. He learns because Susan comes to him for help when the Vampire Red Court kidnaps Maggie to use in a ritual to remove Harry and his family from being a thorn in their side. Harry enlists Murphy, Thomas, Molly and others to help him battle the vampires. In trying to get other wizards to help him he makes an exciting discovery about his mentor Ebenezar McCoy. He also has to make a difficult decision at the conclusion of the book which involves someone very close to him. There is a fake climax and then the actual climax leaves you with your fingernails hanging on the edge of a cliff.
Did I like it? These books combine humor, adventure, the supernatural, police work and even a little romance into a entertaining time spent with the characters. Oh and another thing I really like is that things change, the status quo is never the same from book to book.
What is with the title of the review? A couple of things happen in the book that I never imagined, which is just like life.

Why did I pick this up? I have been reading through this series and I really enjoy it. I enjoy the fact the characters change as the series chugs along.
What is the story? Morgan, a wizard who has persecuted Harry throughout the series, shows up at Harry’s’ house wounded and on the lam. He has been accused of murdering another important and being a traitor to the White Council. He protest his innocence to Harry and Harry being the investigator that he is, begins an investigation. He runs up against vampires, skinwalkers and other supernatural baddies while teaming up with fairies, vampires, wizards, werewolves and humans of all kinds. It is jam packed with all kinds of action, romance and humor.
Did I like it? Yes, it has all the elements that make this series fun. The combination of the supernatural with the worst and best of the human condition makes for a good read.
What is with the title of the review? To preserve the peace between wizards and other supernatural entities a sacrifice of someones integrity has to be sacrificed.
Small Favor by Jim Butcher; 2008; $23.95; 423 pages; A Roc Book, New York, NY; 978-0-451-46189-6; Checked out from Multnomah County Library; 3/3-3/6
Why did I pick this up? I have really enjoyed this series and continue to read them until I don’t.
What is the story? Harry has to battle the Billy Goats Gruff, among other things. Mostly this is the story of Harry and his allies versus a bunch of demons that are the personification of the 30 pieces of silver that Judas received for betraying Christ. He discovers new powers in himself and his apprentice along with some of his other allies.
Did I like it? Yes, one of the things that I really appreciate about this series and several others is that the characters change and grow throughout the series.
What is with the title of the review? Harry finds some new powers within himself, finds out about love, Molly learns some things about herself and her family, Murphy learns more about the supernatural and her part in it, and one of the characters suffers a serious injury.
White Night by Jim Butcher; 2007; $23.95; 407 pages; Roc Books, New York, NY; 978-0-451-46140-7; checked out from Multnomah County Library, Fairview; 1/6-1/8
Why did I pick this up? Because I have become addicted to the adventures of Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden and it had been awhile since I read one.
What is the story? Someone is killing woman who are practicing magic, they are not witches, but are practicing magic. Harry is brought into the case and works together with an old friend, whom he hasn’t seen in years. His brother, Thomas, and Harry are both suspects in the murders. Harry has to work together with the white court of vampires against the red court of vampires. His friends and some allies, who are definitely not friends. He is being manipulated as he is manipulating others, there is so much manipulating going on that it is ridiculous. Some of the more peripheral characters from the series step up and are more in the forefront in this story.
Did I like it? Yes, I really enjoy the combination of police procedural and supernatural fantasy. I am looking forward to reading more of the series.
What is with the title of the review? Harry has to work with some people that he is not particularly fond but they are the enemy of his enemy so they work together for awhile.
